Episode 16: Dan Kohler
Renegade Kitchen (twitter @renegadekitchen) launched in September 2009 and quickly distinguished itself among the gluten free crowd for its no-nonsense approach to cooking and baking. Designed by Dan Kohler, an actor in NYC, Renegade Kitchen provides recipes that are free of both gluten and dairy. In addition to tested recipes Renegade Kitchen is also your source for gluten free video content. Dan hosts both his own show (a man-on-the-street view of food events) and Alternative Appetites, a cooking show collaboration between Renegade Kitchen and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. Dan’s NYC credits include Blue Man Group, Godspell and Law and Order: SVU.
I often ask my podcast guests a silly question to get started, like “what did you have for lunch,” which typically ends up getting cut out of the finished podcast. Dan’s answer was so good, I had to leave it in.
Dan started recording family recipes at a really early age. There’s a great piece over at The Kitchn about documenting family recipes.
After being a Blue Man, Dan started Renegade Kitchen.
The “kitchen” in Renegade Kitchen is a place for Dan to cook up all sorts of creative stuff, not just food. I love that! We talk about the awesome observational humor in the “Swim Team” comic series on his blog. See them all here. People-watchers unite!
I mention this IACP Kids in the Kitchen video that Dan made, which I think is a great example of the work he does.
